Overton Insights Poll: April 2025

April 2025

This Overton Insights poll examines voter opinions on hypothetical matchups including an 2028 Obama–Trump presidential election and a 2024 presidential election redo between Trump and Harris. The survey also explored the impact of tariffs, data privacy, and the most popular TV shows of the 2000s.

Political Polling:

If the 22nd Amendment were amended to allow presidents to serve 3 terms, Obama polls 6 points higher than President Trump (53%-47%). Obama leads Trump by 18 points with Independents and 22 points with moderates.

In the 2024 Presidential do-over vote, President Trump leads Kamala Harris by 3 points (48%-45%).

In a hypothetical head-to-head presidential matchup between Vice President J.D. Vance and Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith as a potential democratic candidate, Smith receives 34% of the vote, trailing Vance by only 9 points.

Another hypothetical presidential matchup between Vance, Harris, and actor Matthew McConaughey leaves McConaughey with an impressive 14% of the vote. Harris and Vance would remain in a deadlock at 39% each. McConaughey is popular with both Independents (25%) and moderates (22%).

Kamala Harris looks to take the 2028 Democratic primary by storm with 48% of the vote. New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez comes in second with 15%. California Governor Gavin Newsom trails behind her with only 10% of the vote. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro claims 9%, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer receives 6%.

In the 2028 Republican primary for president, Vice President J.D. Vance claims 36% of the vote, but Donald Trump Jr. is a close second with 31% of the Republican vote. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis takes a not-so-close third with 13%. Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and United States Secretary of State round out the category, each with 6% of the votes.

Public Policy Polling:

A slim plurality of voters (38%) say tariffs are hurtful to the economy, white another 34% believe the impact of tariffs is dependent on the specific policy. Only 21% of registered voters take the position that tariffs will help the economy and protect domestic products, jobs, and industries.

Modern vehicles store extensive personal data, including: Text messages and call logs (synced from smartphones), GPS history (previous locations and frequently visited places), Browsing history (from built-in internet systems), Shopping and payment data (used in digital dashboards or apps). If pulled over, only 20% of voters believe this information should be accessible without a warrant, while 76% believe it should not be.

An overwhelming majority of voters (79%) support a policy that would require law enforcement officers to name a specific person when serving a search warrant. Only 16% oppose it.

Voters also highly support search warrants for digital information (such as Google search history or genealogical DNA databases) requiring stronger legal protections (76%), such as naming a suspect or using specific details to limit unnecessary surveillance. Another 17% of voters oppose this policy.

Regulation and government oversight of Artificial Intelligence technologies are largely supported by voters, with 44% who prefer strong government oversight to prevent risks and misuse. Another 28% prefer light government regulation, remaining wary that too much could slow innovation. Industry self-regulation, including allowing companies to set their own standards of ethics and safety, is supported by 14% of voters. Only 3% believe that no regulation is the best option.

Gig workers and freelancers—including ride-share drivers, delivery workers, and independent contractors—do not receive traditional job benefits because they are not classified as employees. Portable benefits are designed to move with workers from job to job, allowing independent workers to access healthcare, retirement plans, or paid leave without being tied to a single employer. The majority of voters (61%) support these benefits for gig workers, while only 21% oppose this policy.

When asked if voters would be more likely to use a ride-share or delivery service if they offered their employees portable benefits, 41% said yes they would. To 45% of voters, this policy would not make a difference in their use of any service. 

Public Opinion Polling:

Breaking Bad proves to be the best popular TV show from the 2000s, receiving 23% of votes. The Sopranos takes second place with 17%, and The Office comes in third place with 16%
