President Trump recently floated the idea of eliminating federal taxes on gambling winnings. Cunningham noted the irony that prediction market platforms have spent years distinguishing themselves from gambling sites to secure legal standing. If gambling winnings become tax-free while prediction markets remain classified differently, users could face a tax disadvantage compared to traditional sportsbooks.
Melendez offered a more measured view on whether tax implications would alter prediction market accuracy as a forecasting tool, suggesting individual profit motives would likely remain the primary driver of participation regardless of tax treatment.
"They have literally spent their whole time lobbying saying they're not [gambling]. Now there actually could be an issue the other way." - Mark Cunningham
An Emerson poll shows Vivek Ramaswamy trailing Democrat Amy Acton by one point (45%–46%)—an 11-point swing from August, when he led by 10 points. The same poll shows Lt. Gov. Jon Husted leading his Senate race by three points. Cunningham called the gap between the two Republicans a red flag for Ramaswamy’s candidacy.
Melendez cautioned against firm conclusions from early polling, noting economic conditions could shift sentiment before the primary. He emphasized affordability concerns, pointing to Ohio’s blue-collar demographics that respond to economic conditions rather than party affiliation alone. He also emphasizes the risks of nationalizing local races, noting that voters often approach different offices with different criteria. He pointed to Utah school board races where candidates running explicitly partisan campaigns lost while state legislative candidates with similar messaging succeeded, suggesting voters actively distinguish between levels of government.
"All politics is local... People approach each election differently, depending upon where and what the position is." - Michael Melendez
In Tennessee’s 7th District, Republican Matt Van Epps defeated progressive Democrat Aftyn Behn by nine points in a district Trump carried by 22. In Minneapolis, incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey defeated progressive challenger Omar Fateh. Cunningham viewed both as cautionary signals for progressives who interpreted Zohran Mamdani’s New York mayoral win as evidence of a broader leftward shift.
